More consumers complained about claim denials last year than any other type of insurance problem, the Ohio Department of Insurance said today.

Nearly a third of the 6,506 complaints closed by the department in 2008 involved claim denials.
Breaking down complaints by type of insurance: 42 percent of consumers griped about health insurance, 24 percent about auto coverage, 15 percent about life and annuity insurance, nearly 14 percent about homeowners/renters insurance.

The department says it saved or recovered $9.7 million for Ohioans through its services.
