GEICO established the Military Service Awards in 1988 to pay tribute to members of the military for their contributions to the public good in their roles as “citizens and soldiers,” said Richard Kidd, vice president of military marketing. Each service branch makes nominations for the award in one of three categories: drug and alcohol abuse prevention, fire safety and fire prevention, and traffic safety and accident prevention. A selection committee of senior enlisted members chooses the award winners.
